Why use a Refuge Cage?
All squirrels are vulnerable to cold and wet weather and they may not survive if held captive for a long period or overnight in any open cage trap. A covered Refuge is recommended when traps cannot be checked frequently.
A covered Elgeeco Refuge Cage attached below the floor door of the Elgeeco squirrel trap provides a darkened weatherproof compartment into which a captured squirrel can retreat if it wishes.
Squirrels captured in cage traps on the ground are vulnerable to attacks from foxes, badgers, crows, cats and dogs.
Although an Elgeeco trap is up off the ground, the use of the optional Refuge Cage provides captured animals with a retreat away from the eyes of possible predators.
In areas where protected species might be present, nesting material can also be provided.
Refuge Cages have a top entrance opening which aligns with the floor door in the Elgeeco Squirrel Trap (shown right).
Refuge Cages are easy to secure to the bottom of the Elgeeco Squirrel Trap using the short length of plastic coated spring wire supplied. The tension in the spring wire will also hold weather protection, such as a black plastic bin-liner in place.
